Gregorio Botta’s angels appear as ‘secular tabernacles’ made of wax, with glimpses through openings that invite a closer look. The sculptures contain inner worlds illuminated by ‘light events’ emitted by the play of reflections of gold pigments placed within them. These optical devices seem to revive certain ghosts of memory: the spectral environment enclosed in L’angelo dell’attesa (‘The angel of waiting’) evokes a psychic dimension of domestic space, a place of collective memory traversed by melancholy.
