In her work, Elisa Sighicelli searches for a correspondence between the photographic subject and the surface on which they are printed. In the case of Untitled (8996), a photograph of the facade of the Gesù Nuovo church in Naples is printed directly on travertine, to restore the physicality of the image and to create a short circuit between the two- and three-dimensionality. The veins of the stone merge with the image, making it impossible to discern which features are real and which are photographed: it is no longer an image of a stone object, but a material image made of travertine. The work is a reflection on the act of seeing, on the role and possibilities of photography in the relationship between representation and reality, between the virtual and the physical.
